Walking up the stairs of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolkata, I always have the feeling like entering the Mecca, Vatican or Kashi Viswanath of Fine Arts.
The huge fountains at the gate, the classy porch adorned with the stylish sculptures, the few hanging paintings with perfectly set light on them from inside, visible from outside the entrance give my inquisitive itchy mind a sudden creative thirst – of what shall I experience today. A few days back, this thirst was compounded three folds as I was walking into the new south gallery of the Academy on the invitation of a sweet personality and a good artist friend – Mr. Subrata Ghosh, as something totally new was on the menu.
I know him for about couple of years now, not only as a marvelous artist but also as a very nice person, who has a simple heart and super-active taste buds just like me. Mr. Subrata Ghosh (Painter) has made a Triangle – with Mr. Subrata Pal (Sculptor) and Mr. Atanu Pal (Photographer of National Geographic fame) – as they combined their forces of creativity in their respective domains of Fine Arts to create one of the most unique Exhibition name TRIO.
My understanding of the art world is new as I am dealing in Fine Art related matters for the last three-four years only. What I have learnt is, there are THREE different species of Art Lovers & Art Experts today (Completely My opinion and the reader have full right to disagree). It is important to discuss this fact at this stage because as a reader, I don’t know your level of experience, expertise, knowledge, taste and interest in art. Judgmental by nature as we humans are, we start reading an article on subject of critical skills, with a raised nose thinking who is the author and what is his / her credibility to publish an opinion. Especially if something sounds like a REVIEW.
So, as I was saying there are quite a few species of Art Lovers in India (especially Kolkata) right now. Species One – The talented Artists & Critics, with in-depth knowledge but very high expectations. They think of the best of National & International artists are the bottom-line standards, below which their creative tongue cannot appreciate. Species Two – The learned & knowledgeable artists & critics who love to apricate Good Work, no matter from where it comes. They also love to inspire people who are learning. Species Three – Novices Like me, who appreciates and loves whatever is visually appealing, soothing and is gratifying to the creative nerves and neurons of the body.
Coming from the background of the third species, entering the New South Gallery for the Fine Art Exhibition of Trio, I was spellbound and overwhelmed. The entrance was adorned with a large well-framed Photograph of a surrealistic life situation caught in the camera so easily but fantastically. Entering from the left side, I was welcomed by the Photographs of Mr. Atanu Pal. Life has been captured – in the frames – from a couple walking on a sandy beach to the rice fields, from water droplets to birds to the “in the making Durga Idols”, every light, every angle spoke of how we live, how think – about our way of life.
But a lot more astonishment was awaiting me when I walked inside, as I saw the marvelous Sculptures. I truly have no capability to judge how better or worse they were, but what seemed to me was the fact that may be God also has created a few models like that before he actually thought of creations itself.
Finally, I saw the Paintings of my dear friend. The large and small canvases of vibrant colours. They all depicted, in the words of the artist himself, the challenges of today’s society – from equality to water crisis, from women empowerment to peace & humanity and in some cases – just a lovely piece of Artwork, that you would love to put in your drawing room.
Every piece of Artwork, whether a Painting, a Sculpture or a Photograph was worth hanging either at the home, or at the office lobby, or at your restaurant, or at your chamber. Putting up these artworks is not just buying art for appreciating art but also creating a strong positive Visual Energy in front of your eyes.
When three main pillars of Fine Arts – Painting, Sculpture & Photography resonates together, from the creative hearts of three professionals who have dedicated their whole life to positive creative thinking, then and only then, such a marvel of an experience is created. This Exhibition, that started on 17th October through the auspicious hands of the great artist Mr. Subhaprasanna Bhattacharjee, is going to last till the 23rd of October and is visible from 12 pm to 8 pm daily.
So, if you are going to be around the Academy Area in Kolkata, don’t miss this exhibition. It shall surely gratify your creative thirst for sure.
